Van Halen “A Different Kind of Truth” [Pre-release review]

Though putting an article like this on our own band blog is a little bit of off topic, I do this none the less, because Van Halen means so much to us and it has so much to do with our music, and in fact...to gain some internet access;)

Van Halen “A Different Kind of Truth” [Pre-release review]
by Tak Nakamine / Imari Tones (Japan)

"While other legendary rock bands are about to end their 50 years of Rockn’Roll history, Van Halen starts next 100 years!”

In 1970’s,
Eddie Van Halen was having a hard time while he played cover tunes at night clubs.
Because his sound was so much special and original.
He could never sound like other ordinary guitarists.
But he choose to play with his own sound and technique rather than mimic others.
He invented a whole new sound and technique which nobody could ever imitate.

And then their debut album “Van Halen” became a big hit all around the world.
He made a revolution in rock guitar world.
He changed the way rock guitar is being played forever.
Yes, he won the bet.

In 1983,
Eddie Van Halen was having a hard time because he was forced to play cover tunes on their album, and because he could not play songs featuring his keyboards.
So he built a studio called 5150 Studio, trying to get an creative environment in which he can make his music more freely.
They choose to produce their album mostly by themselves.

And then the album “1984” became a huge hit all around the world, and the song “Jump” went No.1 on hit chart.
Yes, he won the bet.

In 1985,
Eddie Van Halen was having a hard time because their splendid frontman had just quit the band.
But he brought in the new singer with powerful voice and wider voice range, so that they can play those melodic tunes which had been impossible with their previous singer.
Eddie unleashed his melody inside, and wrote songs more freely.
And then, the album “5150” reached to the top of the chart and became a big hit all around the world.
Yes, he won the bet again.

In 1990,
Eddie Van Halen create a new guitar and an amplifier, trying to achieve more massive, bigger and thicker sound which nobody had ever heard before.
Musicman EVH guitars had a huge impact on high end guitar craft in new generations.
And Peavey 5150 amplifiers changed the rock guitar sound all over the world with its new generation high gain sound. They had a huge impact on modern rock sound and many musicians are playing those 5150/6505/EVH amps today.

Eddie played those guitars and amps on the albums called “For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge” and “Balance”, they both went to No.1 and became big hits.
Yes, he won the bet again.

In 1997,
Eddie Van Halen was having a hard time because their powerful singer had just quit he band (or the band fired him, depending on who you ask).
He brought in the new singer.
A singer who is younger, with faith, sometimes naive, sometimes rough, yet with good spirit.
It was because he wanted to pursuit his new music.
A new music with more personal message, with his highest skills and musicianship, which had been impossible with their previous singer.

Eddie’s musicianship, mind and skill were higher than ever.
And his music, its artistic quality reached its peak.

However, it was probably too complicated.
It was something more than beer and girls.

For several reasons, it didn’t went to No.1.
(It still went Gold, though.)

And,
rejection from fans,
pressure from the record company,
those things forced the band to give up this project,
before they put out their 2nd album.

He lost the bet?
I don’t know.

But, at least for me, that was the end of Van Halen.

Eddie Van Halen,
he who had always been making music honestly from his heart,
now his best music was rejected by the world.

After that, Eddie’s tongue cancer and personal problems such as divorce put the band on hiatus for years.
The reunion with Sammy Hager in 2004 went wrong at the end.
Most of the first decade of 21st century, virtually there was no Van Halen in this world.

However, in my opinion, this record called “Van Halen 3” released in 1998, was predicting the next 10 years of Rockn’Roll scene.

In 21st century, it became an internet era.
Music industry went smaller and smaller, records selling less and less.
People started talking about Rock music with nostalgia.

Bands became smaller, and their music became more diverse, mixed, and segmented. It became more and more personal.
And yes, you can find some really good bands among those independent bands, who have nothing to do with commercialism.

“Van Halen 3” was predicting these things in our new generation.
Van Halen was the biggest band in the world.
And yet, they made this small and personal music with “Van Halen 3”.
It was a premonition of the first 10 years of 21st century, in which Big Rock is being broken down into small pieces.

Believe it or not,
with this message they left,
we have been making music for more than 10 years,
following the direction they had shown with their last record.
They showed us this independent rock spirit for next 10 years, in trade for their successful career. (At least that’s the way I feel.)

And after that,
I saw quite a few great rock bands in 21st century.
Most of them were small bands, but they were truly special.
Music from those bands, they are more cutting edge, more complicated, so many elements mixed.
That’s the latest rock music in 21st century.

Latest rock music,
it is no longer played by a big rock band in a big arena,
but played by an independent band who sells only 2,000 records.
That’s the rock music in our generation.

I think,
Eddie Van Halen also must have wanted to do that.
And I know he can do that for sure.
Eddie Van Halen, he can play any type of music.
He can make more cutting edge and more complicated music than any young musicians out there.

However, situation never allowed him to do that.
Because Van Halen was too big a band in Rockn’Roll history.
Other hair metal bands from ‘80s, they can do that.
They can do this “once big but now local band playing small venues” thing in this indies-era.
But Van Halen was simply too big to do that.

It was ironic that those many bands from ‘80s, much smaller than Van Halen, reunited and started their career again in smaller places, but Van Halen, the biggest band, could never move and stayed inactive.
They were too big to make a move in this 21st century music scene.

Eddie Van Halen’s last, ultimate achievement,
smaller in size but more personal, more cutting edge, and true to soul.
The world had rejected it.

From that moment, Van Halen was over.
They can’t make real music anymore.

In 2007, they reunited with David Lee Roth and did a big reunion tour through 2007-2008.

That was inevitable.
Because the only choice left for them was a reunion with Dave.
That was the only form the world approve.

However,
I believe it was almost like stepping into his own coffin for Eddie Van Halen.
Because he could not pursuit his new music inside him anymore.

So I thought,
even if they would put out a new album,
it would never be something new,
but it would be just another mediocre reunion album with nostalgic feeling.

Van Halen was always a king,
the royal road of Rockn’Roll,
a leader, a flag-bearer, they are the ones who make the future of Rock.
And they were always THE LOUDEST.
But they will never be in the lead again.
They will never be on top.
All they can do is, to make an old sounding reunion record full of nostalgia with Dave.

I’ve been thinking that way for a long time.

I was wrong.
Very wrong.

I didn’t know there was a way.
Such a beautiful way.

I didn’t know they still can do thing like this.

I didn’t expect it.

Eddie Van Halen surely understands the situation of 21st century rock music scene, too much progressed, too much diverse and segmented, and getting smaller and smaller, and he came up with the solution.
He made a record to break this dead end situation of our time.
A tremendous record.

This album is Game Changing!
This will change the rule of Rockn’Roll world and music industry in this era.

Rock music in dead end, unable to see future, in every aspect, commercially and musically.
But Van Halen they will show the answer for all.
For all the musicians, for all the music lovers,
they will show the answer for NEXT 100 YEARS!!

My expectation was, they would make an album with early Dave era sound, such as Fair Warning or Van Halen 2.

But I was wrong.
They went back even further.

They went to back to their pre-debut era, or even further.
And they successfully acquired the genuine essence of Rockn’Roll, or the genuine root of Entertainment.
In its purity and intensity, now it looks like they are even ahead of AC/DC.

When I saw the video of the song “Tattoo”, I thought.

“When is this band from!?”

It is 2012.
But I felt like I was watching a band from 1912.

Off course there was no rock band on this planet in 1912.
There was no rockn’roll yet.

However, in this simple song called “Tattoo”,
Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth,
these 2 old musicians are telling us a message.

This rock scene 2012,
everything segmented, complicated, broken down.
But is this just the new beginning for Rockn’Roll?

They are telling us.
“Hey it may be 2012. But it is still 1912 for Rockn’Roll”

This is just a beginning.
After now, blues will be born in small clubs in Memphis or Chicago.
Jazz will be born and develop.
And there will be new entertainment.

With this album more than classic,
Van Halen claimed their new estate as a legend,
a legendary entertainer for 100 years.
Just like some bluesmen who played before big mafia boss.

In this 21st century era,
Rockn’Roll is no more in big arena or stadium which holds 20,000 people.
But it is more in clubs which hold only 1,000, or just few hundreds.

Van Halen understands the time for sure.
That’s why they did their rehearsals at ROXY in Los Angels and they did the video for the song “Tattoo” there. A very simple video.

That’s why they choose the New York venue “Cafe Wha?”, which holds only 250, for the place for their first public appearance for the album.

Van Halen, the biggest rock band in the world, went back to their club days and they acquired the essence of Rockn’Roll from the era Rock music was played in small night clubs.

They have rebuilt the Rockn’Roll entertainment with their legendary extraordinary performance skill. And they will take this club gig excitement to big arenas!

Yes, because Van Halen is one of the few legendary rock bands who still is able to tour arenas.

Big arena tour with club gig intimacy and intensity.
Something only Van Halen can do in this time.
They, again, will show the world what Rockn’Roll is all about.
With the LOUDEST sound.

While other rival bands making records to end the history of Rockn’Roll, only Van Halen made an album which defines the next 100 years of Rockn’Roll.

I have no word to describe how great this is.
This is the right album for the right time. This will be the turning point of Rockn’Roll history.

Van Halen is about to start their new history of Rockn’Roll.

Van Halen is in the lead, again.

This is a “pre-release” review of the upcoming Van Halen album, “A Different Kind of Truth”.
I wrote this article even before I ever hear the actual album.
It is based on the expectation, assumption, and guess.
I did this because I am a huge fan of Van Halen.

We are a Christian rock band from Japan.

Why is a guy from a Christian band writing about Van Halen?

Because, off course, we were heavily influenced by them.

It is no secret our all time No.1 favorite band is Van Halen.

You say Van Halen has never been a Christian band?

Maybe you are right.
But maybe you are wrong.

Gary Cherone is one of the most famous Christian rock musicians in heavy metal scene, which gave a depth to the lyrics of Extreme songs.
(“Without You” clearly sounds like a Christian song?)

Sammy Hager was singing about his unique religious perspective in songs like “Best of Both Worlds” and “Mine All Mine”, but in his Post-Van-Halen works he sounds more like a conservative Christian. (If I understand his English correctly)

And... Wikipedia says Alex Van Halen is now a ordained minister and presided at the weddings of Eddie in 2009.

God bless Mighty Van Halen!

Van Halen

"Van Halen"

Music Man EVH

Van Halen
Van Halen

"Van Halen 3"

Van Halen
Van Halen

Van Halen

Van Halen

Van Halen

"Tattoo"

Eddie Van Halenと、David Lee Roth

Van Halen

Van Halen

Van Halen

Van Halen

Van Halen

Van Halen

"Best of Both Worlds""Mine All Mine"

God bless Mighty Van Halen!

Merry Christmas and a story about Doc Brown

Christmas came a little bit earlier in Japan than the rest of the world (depending on where you live) and last night I and my wife had a good time at a Christmas party at our church VIC (Yokohama, Japan).

Just as a little gift for Christmas, I want to share this song with you. It's a song we wrote for our church VIC, in 2011. As you can see, so many things happened this year in Japan and in the world. Lyric of this song, 2nd half of the song, is our prayer for Japan. We just recorded this song recently. Yes now we finished recording our "new album". We don't know how it will be released so we need your help here but anyway, now we've done it! It's December 24th early morning it was finished. (Working all night. So tired.)

http://soundcloud.com/imaritones/give-us-your-miracles-mp3

Give Us Your Miracles (mp3 sample) by imaritones

We set this song "downloadable" on soundcloud. Because we want to share the blessing with you. So feel free to share this song with anyone. It's a worship type, acoustic song.

Now here comes a new year soon.
And new year season is when we Japanese come back to home, hometown, parant's house, to see their family.

Here I want to share a little story. A journal of a local musician.
It's a story about "a local musician".
When I was a kid, when I was younger, we had video disks of "Back To The Future" movies at home. (It was, on Laser Disk, a media which has extinct long ago...)

I watched the movies (Back To The Future trilogy) many times. Actually I learned so much English from that movie. (It's heavy, hah?)
And I noticed that in the movie, Doc (Emmett Brown) calles himself "a local scientist".

I thought it's funny, because, what's local scientist?
Is it something like local bakery or local florist?

But after watching the movie many times, I gradually begining to like the word "local scientist". Because Doc Emmett Brown was totally an incredible guy. He is not famous. He is not rich. But he has a great science skill and invented a time machine after many years of research! (and no one knows the fact except his best friend Marty McFly.) There is almost not doubt that Doc is one of the greatest scientist ever, but he loves solitude and isolated from the world. People call him crazy. But he doesn't care, he stays humble, doing what he's doing, and call himself "a local scientist".

After I started playing music independently, I began to understand how it is like to be a Doc Brown. Being an independent musician is so much like "Back To The Future" movie. And I found out Doc Brown is the best form of independent music. He became a very good roll model for me.

I want to be a Doc Brown. People may call you crazy, but I continue my research and searching for the best music, trying to invent something new.
I'm not famous but trying to stay humble and call myself "a local musician". These things, probably I learned from Doc Brown?

And probably someday I will invent "Time Machine" and go back to the future:)
(hopefully)

But let me tell you one thing.
Here is something I'm more blessed than Doc Brown.
Doc continued his research alone, and the only one person who understands him was his best friend Marty McFly.

When I look at my life, I have my wife, my band, our friends, our church.
And apperantly, we have more than one person who cares about our music.
This is Musician's Blessing!
Because music is something to share with people!
Even if I'm a stuborn introvert person, I can share our music with people.

I'm not saying we are not going to be famous. Things are getting better and better. And we just have made the greatest record ever.
I'm sure the big things are waiting for us all in 2012.

But I just want to tell you, I'm more than happy being "a local musician".
Because we can receive God's blessing most when we are humble.
Because we know that God is always watching what you do, no matter where you are, or, no matter when you are, I mean, even if you are traveling through time.

I love calling myself "a local musician".

New song video and we need your help!

Well what can I say?
We have been working on our new recording work throughout year 2011.
February-March, we recorded 4 songs, in the occasional blackouts and turmoil after the earthquake.

April we had an opportunity to record 2 songs in Dallas Texas, USA.
(USA recording? Wow, sounds like a dream!)

In summer we (mostly Tak) did one song for Famicom Dojo podcast.

And now we are working on 3 more songs, drum tracks already done.
Probably in January 2012, we will have whole album done.

But here is the problem.
We need a record label.
(Sounds ridiculous?)

As you can see, we have been selling our music independently, mostly on internet.
But this time we want to have a breakthrough.
Next step as a band.

That's why we made these 2 videos.
We have to spread the word and have a breakthrough.

So can you help us?

We need a record label but we don't know how to contact right people.
So we decided we need help from people.

Here is our request.
Can you retweet or post this video on facebook, twitter, blog, anywhere on internet, so that the word will spread?

Here is the first video called "The Concept".

and here is the second video called "You Key". (This song is a killer!)

These are very low budget videos, recorded by iPhone camera, but they represent our attitude so much. Having fun, being happy, and being thankful to God.
It was so much fun to make these videos.
We hope you enjoy this video just like we did while making them.

Blessings,
Tak / Imari Tones

p.s.
It looks like YouTube got a timing problem. Sound and movie sometimes doesn't synchronize. In that case, maybe you can visit our VIMEO page, just in case.

One (very) little victory

Now we finished editing our new videos and ready to show them to you, but today we want to share this one little achievement. In Japan we have a major heavy metal magazine called "Burrn!". It's every metal musician's dream to see their name written on that magazine. And now their January2012 issue, they mentioned about us! (Thanks, Amanda Somerville / Trillium !)

We are just an unknown band doing something weird but this is the first time we were mentioned in major music magazine. (and we are sure there will be many more in the future)

But bigger surprise for us is, this issue of Burrn! magazine is just like a Christian advertisement!! They have Stryper article, and also on August Burns Red interview they focused on their Christianity side (which is very rare in Japanese music magazine) and they put their Christian testimony in the article. Off course we were mentioned as a Christian metal band. How many can you find the word "Christian" in this issue!?

Wow, I can't help but feel GOD is moving here in Japan!!!
It makes me happy! GOD is Awesome!!

"The Concept" on SoundCloud

Hello friends!

We were planning to upload 2 song videos in this month. We were going to make them quick, using the photos and movies from the past.

However, it turned out that we need to do it right in the studio, in order to make good videos.
We gonna make those videos in December.
So, instead, we decided to release the songs on SoundCloud first.

The Concept (sample) - Imari Tones by imaritones

This song is called "The Concept" and we played this song live many times this year.
So some of you already familiar with it.
This is a hard rocking song which goes like "Leave everything behind and follow Jesus Christ~~!".
I want you to spread the word because we need some exposure!
Thank you!

STRYPER was awesome in Japan

Some of you may already know but last week Saturday STRYPER came to Japan and played at LOUDPARK festival. (It has been 22 years since they played last time in Japan)
And, here is a picture with Tak&STRYPER.
Well, it's nothing special. It's meet&greet stuff many bands are doing nowadays.
But let me say this. It was SPECIAL!

Since we started playing Christian Rock, I always loved STRYPER. But their performance at LOUD PARK festival was more than I expected.

Every metal heads attended the festival was amazed by their awesome performance, especially Michael Sweet's amazing voice and twin guitar harmonies.

It was almost something we can call a "miracle". God's glory was shown to Japanese metalheads.

Hope we can be a great band like them in a future.

Side Project(^^)

Long time no update!
(We had some updates on Facebook but no update here on news blog for more than 1 month. Wow, sorry about that.)

We are preparing some "very ambitious" update,
we finished 2 more song mixings and working on 3 more powerful songs.
But for now, let me talk about this "Side Project".

Do you like "Side Project"?
Personally, I don't like it.
I have some favorite bands in my life and I want my heroes to concentrate on their own band/project, rather than those side projects.

But on the other hand, I like helping my friends and having fun together.
I play guitar, bass, sometimes drums in our church worship team,
I play guitar&bass in my pastor's reggae band (Yes, my pastor loves Reggae!)
Also I occasionally join my friends' cover band.

It was last year summer that I met this singer called "Atsuki Ryo"(熱きリョウ).
He was a heavy metal singer from Hiroshima, Japan. And his band had just disbanded a few months before.
He has been singing as a solo act in local bars and clubs around Tokyo.

But he was a very cool guy, and exellent metal singer who has a very wide voice range.
We hit it off together because we both love STRYPER. (smile)

And it was December 2010 that he told me he wanted to play some "Christian Heavy Metal".
He said he was going to write some metal songs for Jesus. And he said he wanted me to play guitars on those songs.
He was not a Christian, but it looks like he was feeling something inside.

It was June this year that he gave me a CD-R with those songs.
Those songs were titled like "Heaven and Hell", "Jesus Christ", and "Soldiers Into Hell" (Yes, they sound pretty much like STRYPER!).

By the end of the summer, I recorded my guitar tracks on his songs.

And now, we got this gig offer from Misono Baptist Church in Kanagawa, a church we played last year. For some reasons, I decided to play this gig with this guy Atsuki Ryo, instead of my band Imari Tones.

We had a meeting in Ikebukuro, and after that we took him to my friend church (Cornerstone Tokyo). And he was very happy there, talking passionately about his idea of God.

So we will play with him at the church concert, in December this year.
This project is called "Atsuki Ryo with Jesus Mode".
...and here is the picture.
Looks like a Japanese rock duo from early 90's, right?

I really hope he's gonna be a fighter for God.
